Sunday's Hope

A little over a year ago, Sunday was rescued from the slaughterhouse, along with her young foal. Upon arriving at Papa's Ranch Equine Rescue, it was discovered that Sunday was not only nursing; she was pregnant with a second foal, and was due to give birth just a few months later!

This beautiful mare, in poor condition when she arrived at the rescue, was eventually separated from her first offspring so that she could carry her fetus to term. We worried about her condition throughout the cold winter months, but with a little TLC and good nutrition, she pulled through.

On a warm spring night in April 2010, Sunday gave birth to a lovely foal, named Bonnie Lou. Bonnie has since grown into a healthy, affectionate, and happy horse. Mother and daughter will continue to live the good life at Papa's Ranch.

The tiger is one of the largest and awesome predators in the wild world. Although critically endangered, tigers still prowl the border of India and Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, Cambodia, Myanmar, Nepal and the Russian Far East. India is home to the largest tiger population.

These are the Royal Bengal tiger cubs. They are found in Sundarban in Bengal, India. The underside of the Bengal tiger is clean white. The stripes are like fingerprints- no two patterns are alike.

Often throughout the year, my husband and I treat ourselves to breakfast at Pineridge Hollow, located near Birds Hill Park, Manitoba. One morning, the restaurant was booked up, and we had to wait outside in the garden along with a large group of other guests. Moments later, a bird began to sing, regaling us with his wonderful, sweet voice.

At first, we were unable to find where this beautiful music was coming from, though we knew the wren was somewhere close-by. And then we found him, perched on a lattice and hidden by blooms - he was only an arms-length away!

The wren continued to sing, undaunted by our close proximity. In a nearby garden, a wedding was underway, and as the bride arrived by the groom's side, the little songbird warbled louder than ever!

Eventually, we sat down to breakfast on the patio, and were treated to the wren's lovely song all throughout the meal.

After losing our previous cat, Peach, to cancer, we soon found that Spud Murphy III filled a deep void in our animal-deprived household. It was a time for new beginnings for all of us!

About this painting: I always want to rescue old barns that have been left to the elements. Abandon memories of days gone by. Barn paintings are considered trite by many artist but for me they are a way of keeping the past alive.

I know I can not restore all of them just like I can not save every stray kitten I see but some days I just can not turn a blind eye to the past. But of course if I had a barn I could save more kittens and it would make a great studio. Think of the size of the work you could create and no more storage problems.

As part of Earth Day, I ventured outside this morning to clean up the street litter and garbage that often collects around a nearby retention pond over the winter. The crows, as usual, were there to help!

The crow's ebony coloring, aggressive loud cawing, and propensity to steal young fledglings have made these birds rather unpopular with many people. But, there is a flipside to this remarkable avian.

Crows are equipped with discerning intelligence, and can recognize humans individually. Their amazing problem solving skills allow them to break open food items (i.e. small containers) by dropping them to the ground from a 20' height. They possess incredible communication skills, and, as some scientific studies show, even know how to count.

Some people are terrified of contracting West Nile Virus from crows, but while a substantial number of these birds have died from the disease, scientists do not believe they spread the virus to humans.

As omnivores, crows will eat pretty much anything, including discarded fast food and roadkill. While many people feel that crows make a mess of the environment, these birds will actually help clean up the litter that we ourselves create!

Patio Visitor (Chipping Sparrow)

This past week, most of the snow has finally melted in Winnipeg! It feels wonderful to throw the windows wide open each morning, and listen to the magical trilling of songbirds. Our yard has now come alive with robins and juncos, and the chipping sparrows will soon be arriving.

Common throughout North America, chipping sparrows are one of the smallest sparrows. As ground feeders, they feast on seeds (sunflower, niger, and millet), and nest in conifers.

If you own a horse and spend a lot of time grooming it, don't discard the hair! Chipping sparrows, once called "hairbirds", love to weave horse hair into their nests. You can leave horse hair on twigs and bushes or near bird feeders - the sparrows will appreciate the effort!

In a beautiful fertile valley here on

southern Vancouver Island the historic

Woodwynn Farm is situated. In operation

for over one hundred years mostly as a

dairy operation. As is often the case the

long time owner had to sell the farm. Thankfully

after quite an effort the farm was saved

from certain development.

It is now operated as a completely organic

farm that has been set up to enable

people who have been lost to the streets

to gain a new direction learning and

working as organic farmers.

Normally, we tend to think of insects as pests. But in truth, we can't survive without them! Mother Nature has created these lilliputian creatures to pollinate many of our food sources. Only 10% of flowering plants do not require pollination.

Too much rain, wind, or the use of pesticides can intefere with the job that insects do. Among the plants they pollinate are: herbs, spices, seeds and grains, as well as peas, beans, tomatoes, cucumbers, apples, melons, peaches, pears, peppers, lemons, limes, carrots, onions, cashews, celery, figs, sunflowers, blueberries, clover, and squash - not to mention coffee and chocolate!

Habitat loss, fragmentation, manicured lawns, non-native gardens, and the cultivation of modified corn (monarchs) are the greatest threats to pollinators.

This beautiful animal, the world's largest land carnivore-the Polar Bear, faces threat of extinction due to Global Warming. The rising temperature is melting its habitat, the Arctic sea ice, fast. Adapted to freezing temperatures, the Polar bear can't live on land all the time, because it overheats quickly when running. Sea ice during summer is critically important because Polar bears use ice pack (floating ice) as a platform to hunt ringed seals, their primary food source. And, these seals are found commonly on solid ice.

If the emission of green house gases is slowed down and eventually stopped, the ongoing loss of Arctic sea ice could be stopped and our Polar bears could be saved. Lets hope for the best...

'Lagoon Willows'

The brackish water of this lagoon requires some pretty

prolonged cold temperatures to freeze which is a good

thing for the wintering waterfowl during those cold times

when other sheltered spots become frozen.

cabin which has seen it's better days. Still it is

a refuge for the lonely straggler. Much needed comfort from the storm.

I was several hours from home one weekend recently when I looked out the window from where I was eating dinner and saw these trash containers. Thoughts crossed my mind about how this restaurant processed the waste. Then, on our way home, I saw a train full of garbage containers which must have been a mile long and wondered where they were headed to and what was to become of what was inside. Was it the end of the line at a dumping site for the garbage inside them? Was it just the beginning of a spiral called garbage that is spinning out of control?

White-throated sparrows are one of my favorite birds - their springtime song is magical!

Unfortunately, the number of these talented, musical songsters is quickly declining in many states and provinces. These sparrows require small, cleared tracts of land surrounded by wilderness forest where they raise their young. Because of extensive logging and development, they are now left with fewer choice nesting areas.

Over the centuries, as man spread out into the wild places to make new homes for themselves, the wolf population has dwindled. For reasons real and imagined the wolf has often paid with it's life for crimes it did not commit.

The wolf is finally starting to repopulate after almost being driven to extinction.

In order for this to continue there will have to be compromises on both sides of the wolf debate, between the organizations that are trying to help the wolves and ranchers and farmers who's lively hoods depend on the safety of their animals.

Using the longest series of data available, reseachers have shown that an abnormally long warm spell in the Southern Ocean during the late 1970s contributed to a decline in the population of emperor penguins at Terre Adelie, Antarctica. Here on the West (Wet) Coast water is a very

obvious renewable resource. However the reverence

I feel toward our rivers, lakes and streams goes

far beyond such a mundane title.
Rivers such as the Cowichan in this painting are

the very life blood of the entire region in which it

flows and sparkles. All forms of flora and

fauna including salmon, steelhead and of course

the main threat to its health,

human beings are dependent on its survival!

Gladly this was not always so. For the first people

of this area the river was everything and

formed a very significant part of their

culture and spirituality.

''The peace symbol dates from 1958 and was designed for the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament or CND. The emblem combines the semaphore signals for N and D, meaning Nuclear Disarmament. The letter ‘N’ is represented by two flags held in an upside-down V, while ‘D’ has one flag pointed up and the other pointed straight down. Another theory is that the Roman emperor Nero originally devised the image. He ordered Saint Peter to be crucified upside down and the sign really depicts a broken cross. There are also claims that the modern sign for universal peace was actually linked to the devil in the medieval period. However, it is generally accepted that the peace symbol as we know it has its origins in the disarmament movement of the late 1950’s.''

'Makin' Hay'

This piece was done a couple of years ago and depicts

one of my favourite forms of agriculture!

As well these particular fields just outside Victoria are

some of the prettiest hay fields every!

They are also part of a classic example of 'urban creep'

You can now see glimpses of a housing development

through the background trees!

Sadly more and more Canadian agricultural land is

swallowed up every year and has continued unabated

since I was a very young boy...

In Manitoba where I live, Western Painted Turtles are an abundant species. Not so in other areas of the country, such as southwestern B.C., where these turtles are listed as endangered by COSEWIC (The Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada).

The Painted Turtles' flagging numbers are a result of disturbed nesting activities (i.e. shoreline development), wetland drainage, and road building near wetland areas.

Other turtles of North America, such as the Leatherback Sea Turtle, the Kemp's Ridley Sea Turtle, and the Hawksbill Sea Turtle are currently facing extinction. This is particularly sad because turtles have been around for 215 million years, and are older than lizards, snakes, and crocodiles.
